SIMPLE KITCHEN REMODELS, BY MIKE FOURNIER, TULSA
Doing a kitchen remodel only makes sense if the new plan will simplify your daily routine. An attractive kitchen that is poorly arranged will add to the time and energy that it takes to do the daily chores.
Kitchens: More time is spent in the kitchen than in any other room in the house. It is a prime place for cooking, eating, entertaining, and all-around gathering.
Remodel by the Work Triangle The refrigerator, sink, and stove are the basic work areas. They need to be conveniently situated so that you don't have to run back and forth.
Consolidate kitchen contents with a pantry A walk-in pantry is a room where the kitchen's contents, i.e., food, provisions, dishes, or linens are stored, making it easy to find them when you need them. The pantry serves as an addition to the kitchen. Another option is the pull-out pantry which can be installed in an area as small as a few inches wide.
Don't waste space Cabinets can be installed that go to the ceiling. Baskets and shelving inside the cabinets allow for additional storage space. Also, a hanging rack for pots and pans will open up cabinet space.
Let appliances do some of the dirty work Consider adding a dishwasher with a third rack, it will reduce the number of times you have to load the dishwasher. Another time saver is a self-cleaning oven. Appliances with the Energy Star rating help consumers spot products that are energy efficient. Products carrying this symbol inform consumers that the products save time and protect the environment.
Create areas for your kids The kitchen counter is a quick, informal place for kids to eat. Provide stools at the counter to give the kids easy access. Also, if snacks and beverages are to be readily available to your kids, be sure to place them on the lower shelves.
Kitchen remodels offer the best return on your investment dollar. But before you consider granite counters, solid wood cabinets, and hardwood flooring, give thought to making sure the new kitchen is energy efficient and will be in keeping with how your family uses the kitchen.
